<p>My wife safely delivered our second son on July 21st. We named him Boaz Oluwamitobi Peterson. We will be calling him Tobi. So now we have Tolu and Tobi. I am really really happy, and I&#8217;ve been bombarded with so many other emotions like fear and anxiety and joy etc&#8230; </p>
<p>My biggest prayer is that I am able to provide my family with everything they need, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I truly don&#8217;t care what they become in life, but I hope they are supremely hardworking and super-passionate for everything they do.</p>
<p>Interestingly, I was browsing facebook while having my tea, and I came across this wall post by my friend Cai which I thought was profound. She says:</p>
<blockquote><p>I could see how back in the biblical times when people lived for hundreds of years, they really had time on their hands. , now the avarage person lives to approximately 87 years. People compared to 400 years&#8230; <strong>We really better get wit what really is important and stop WASTING Time with things that don&#8217;t matter</strong>. Enjoy every minute you have, Love,laugh, and share your wisdom make a difference in someones life.</p></blockquote>
<p>I know exactly what matters&#8230;</p>

<p>In my senior year at Kutztown University I met a Math Professor from the country of Mali. He had REALLY dark skin, and I thought to myself, &#8220;hah, i&#8217;m not the darkest guy at kutztown university!&#8221;. He had grey hair &#8211; the type that is common among older african men &#8211; the kind that looks like a combination of fine-ly ground black pepper and salt (in his case, more salt) &#8211; the kind of grey hair that only comes with wisdom. His grey hair reminded me of my father&#8217;s. But if Dr. Guisse dyed his hair black, he could fit in as one of the college students. I was immediately drawn to Dr. Amadou Guisse, an incredibly bright and opinionated man who could talk (and I could listen to) for hours on end.</p>
<p>And then I met his daughter Rhym (pronounced &#8211; Reem) who is her fathers daughter (smart/opinionated/grey-hair). At the time she was a computer science major like me, but she didn&#8217;t fit in. I could tell that she did not belong in a computer lab, rather a tv-set or stage&#8230; I think she finally realizes this, and she is making it happen. So she asked me to build her a website, and I couldn&#8217;t say no because I know her dad and her husband Jite is a very close friend of mine &#8211; he was one of the first people I met when we came to America, and we&#8217;ve been friends ever since.</p>
<p>Fortunately, on my commute, I can work on the train, and I was a able to finish this site for her. I wanted to capture her Arabic and French heritage and convey her bursting personality&#8230;</p>
<p>I hope I did a good job. What do you think? Check out: <a href="http://IamRhym.com" target="_blank">IamRhym.com</a></p>

		<description><![CDATA[
So i am madly in love with my wife, she is awesome. We work on our marriage daily, and often, when we have a chance, &#8230;]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://dbala.com/fight/fight/" rel="attachment wp-att-453"><img src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/fight.jpg" alt="" title="fight" width="363" height="500" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-453" /></a></p>
<p>So i am madly in love with my wife, she is awesome. We work on our marriage daily, and often, when we have a chance, we will go to a marriage seminar or workshop. For us, there is a deliberate effort. </p>
<p>What I dislike about these seminars, is that the man is usually always the &#8220;<em>bad guy</em>,&#8221; we can&#8217;t seem to get it right, we keep dropping the ball. I asked my <a href="http://svcog.com" target="_blank">pastor</a> why this is the case, and he tactfully said, (and I paraphrase) &#8220;historically the man is dubbed the head of the household and the responsibility for it&#8217;s success is first on him.&#8221; </p>
<p>See, we love the power &#8211; of being the head of the house &#8211; and wield it when it is to our advantage. The problem is that as the leader, there is also a heavier load to carry &#8211; you know&#8230; with great power comes great responsibility &#8211; spiderman (i think). </p>
<p>The difference between now and times-past is that we want the privilege which comes with power, but not the burden.</p>
<p>In marriage counseling, we also learnt that there are two ways people deal with conflict, and that is <em><strong>fight</strong></em> or <em><strong>flight.</strong></em> Simply put, you either stay and confront the situation, or you run away (emotionally or physically.) Again, too many of us are choosing the latter.</p>
<p>So, marriage is hard work, even when I stay and fight, it is not always positive, and it usually always hurts. But the alternative &#8211; being flighty &#8211; is not an option.</p>
<p>I want to leave you with this, in and of myself, I cannot win this fight. Greater men than me have lost the fight for fidelity, accountability, and honor. That is when my faith in Christ fills the gap. Nehemiah 4:14 says:</p>
<blockquote><p>After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, &#8216;Don&#8217;t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.&#8217;</p>

		<description><![CDATA[...another semester at Boston University is about to come to an end, ]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/bu-logo.gif" alt="Boston University Logo" title="bu-logo" width="112" height="50" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-420" /></p>
<p>&#8230;another class at Boston University is about to come to an end, and I realized that I haven&#8217;t mentioned a peep to you of my graduate school experience at <a href="http://bu.edu" target="_blank">bu.edu</a>, so what better way than to give you a peek into a paper i&#8217;ll be handing in shortly, on lessons learned in this class.</p>
<blockquote><p>i leave you with this thought&#8230; there is nothing glamorous about grad school, it is hard freaking work!</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Project Communications Management (AD 643) Research Project &#8211; Lessons Learned</strong></p>
<p>	The goal of the Team Project was build on the existing work of a team member. We were to add research and develop all the elements of a communication plan. We selected a team member’s project which involved the construction of a brand new high school. In this context, our job was to explore the Leadership and Team structure as outlined by the project plan, and also factor-in how communication and communication planning would be executed.</p>
<p>Interestingly, the virtual team consisted of people within geographic proximity of one another &#8211; north eastern United States &#8211; this would be the only thing we had in common. Similar to a real-world project team, we were diverse ethnically, and in our level of (academic) experience. However, we quickly realized &#8211; on the first conference call &#8211; that we were all very capable, intelligent, A-type personalities; an inevitable mixture in a management class. Fortunately, and to the credit of the material put forth in the course, we quickly defined our roles &#8211; as administrator (myself), subject-matter expert, and editor &#8211; in a manner which allowed each member’s skill and personality to be delightfully complimented by one another. </p>
<p>It was interesting to see our group go though some steps that we would eventually be recommending to the subject matter &#8211; i.e. the construction project. We clearly identified the deliverables, setup meeting intervals and venue (conference call), a project management and collaboration tool online (http://bu.dbala.com/ad643/), and we even came to a consensus on the tone/language of our group (paper).</p>
<p>This was the most pleasant group project experience I’ve ever had. Not only because it consisted of professionals, a clear goal and a solid deadline, but we had excellent resources to draw from (i.e. lecture materials, faculty, research tools, etc.). Any project with the same disposition is on track for success.</p>
<p>My lesson learned is simple yet profound. It is that project communications management includes the process of devising a communications plan with your team. Sometimes &#8211; even more important than the actual deliverable itself &#8211; the process of establishing the plan allows each member not only achieve buy-in, but also learn to speak the language of the team/project. This allows the communication originating from the team to be focused and unified &#8211; making the message clear, meaningful, and less prone to the effects of NOISE (PMBOK).</p>

		<description><![CDATA[I like to share things that I find valuable and helpful, and The Pomodoro Technique by Francesco Cirillo absolutely falls into this category.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: center;">
<p>I like to share things that I find valuable and helpful, and <a href="http://www.pomodorotechnique.com/" target="_blank">The Pomodoro Technique by Francesco Cirillo</a> absolutely falls into this category. I&#8217;ve steadily practiced his methodology for the past 6 months, and the results are remarkable.</p>
<p>I do not claim to have ADHD, but I have the tendency to jump from task to task, without spending any substancial time accomplishing anything. This is especially prevalent when my todo list is massive and I feel a bit overwhelmed.</p>
<p>As I write now, I am under the guidance of a pomodoro.</p>
<p>The idea is simple, make a list of tasks that need to be accomplished, you then get a kitchen timer, set it to 25 minutes and focus on a SINGLE task (and NOTHING else) for that duration. At the end of 25 minutes, you take a 5 minute break to do what ever (preferably something constructive) and then you do it again. After 4 consecutive pomodoros (each interval is referred to as a pomodoro) you take a 10 minute break.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">see:<br />
<a rel="attachment wp-att-397" href="http://dbala.com/i-love-me-some-pomodoro/screen-shot-2010-03-19-at-5-49-49-am/"><img class="size-full wp-image-397 aligncenter" title="Screen shot 2010-03-19 at 5.49.49 AM" src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Screen-shot-2010-03-19-at-5.49.49-AM.png" alt="" width="558" height="218" /></a></p>
<p>This technique is great because it prevents you from email anxiety and instills discipline. This discipline has been tremendous, especially while working on my graduate classes.</p>
<p>I do not use a physical timer. I have something better. I use a widget on my mac that allows keeps track of my pomodoros.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a rel="attachment wp-att-398" href="http://dbala.com/i-love-me-some-pomodoro/screen-shot-2010-03-19-at-6-04-06-am/"><img class="size-full wp-image-398 aligncenter" title="Screen-shot-2010-03-19-at-6.04.06-AM" src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Screen-shot-2010-03-19-at-6.04.06-AM.gif" alt="" width="443" height="27" /></a></p>
<p>It is excellent because it actually mimics the ticking sound, and feels authentic. The ticking sound bothers at first, but after a while, it&#8217;s like marching to a beat, a subliminal keep-it-up reminder&#8230; <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pomodorotechnique-timer" target="_blank">here is a list of software timers</a></p>
<p>A great by-product of the pomodoro technique is the task log. As a freelancer, it is indispensable! I use it as my informal timesheet because I know exactly what I worked on, and when, and how many pomodoros it took.</p>
<p>The technique encourages you to break down tasks into manageable 25 minute increments. If something will take more than 25 minutes to accomplish, then you need to break it down. This does wonders for the mind, it also makes things seem less overwhelming.</p>
<p>I would love to see this in practice in a team environment&#8230; it could be wicked!</p>
<p>So I encourage you, give it a try&#8230; <a href="http://www.pomodorotechnique.com/resources/cirillo/ThePomodoroTechnique_v1-3.pdf" target="_blank">read this</a>, and let me know how it works for you.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Today I received my business cards, just in time for my trip to India... I love the texture, the look, the attitude... totally wicked!]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://dbala.com/mondo-mondo-mondo/bizcards/" rel="attachment wp-att-356"><img src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/bizcards.jpg" alt="" title="bizcards" width="800" height="600" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-356" /></a></p>
<p>Today I received my business cards, just in time for my trip to India&#8230; I love the texture, the look, the attitude&#8230; totally wicked! You could say that they are <a href="http://www.yourdictionary.com/mondo" target="_blank">MONDO</a> &#8211; thanks for the word Patty!!!</p>
<p>I promise you that I will be handing them out to every single person I meet &#8211; that looks like they can spell camaraderie.</p>
<p>I am going to take 100 cards and see if I can hand them all out in 5 days overseas, even more importantly, I would like to see how many people actually call.</p>
<p>Seriously people&#8230; I am doing this business thing for real! The first 2 months were petrifying, it is amazing to watch my wife keep her cool after doing the bills (Laly you are AWESOME!!!) and it is also amazing to see that every month we have just enough. I&#8217;ve setup the business account, I use <a href="http://www.freshbooks.com/?ref=afe66acb187469-1" target="_blank">FRESHBOOKS</a> for time tracking and invoicing, google apps for document management, scheduling and collaboration, and a good &#8216;ol whiteboard for project management! The foundation is set and is solid.</p>
<p>Lets do this!</p>
<p>So I&#8217;ve revised my manifesto a bit, this was originally inspired by the guys at http://lesseverything.com. So here it goes:</p>
<blockquote><p>I’m the co-founder of an unknown web/design/identity company. I don’t have aspirations of being some widely known madman genius that develops massively popular products. I don’t dream of Ferrari, jets and hookers. I want to know my users, I want them to know me and feel like they can email me with questions anytime.</p>
<p>I want to work with Obinna Elechi until the internet goes away and it’s replaced with microchips in your brain. Then he and I will find some other business to build. I want to stay inspired and continue to work with amazing people. I want our company to invest in people, artists, craftsmen, people with passion.</p>
<p>I want to ride my bike with my kids to school in the mornings and coach their sport teams in the afternoon. My goal is to embarrass them because I’m awkward and weird. I want to take more vacations, buy an RV and nomad around the world. I want work when I feel like it, not because I have to.</p>
<p>I don’t want to build a company that has no flavor, no passion and is a lifeless machine. I want a company that people either love or love a lot. I am the co-founder of an unknown web/design/identity company, I work too much, I am stressed and I can’t imagine doing anything else.</p></blockquote>
<p>Best,<br />
Bala.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://dbala.com/lipstick-on-a-pig/esremodeling/" rel="attachment wp-att-336"><img src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/esremodeling.gif" alt="" title="Eric Schultz Remodeling" width="640" height="480" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-336" /></a></p>
<p>&#8230;yeah, so as soon as I saw the business card, I knew we had to go BOLD! </p>
<p>and the result: <a href="http://remodelingberkscounty.com" target="_blank">RemodelingBerksCounty.com</a></p>
<p>Seriously, if you meet Eric Schultz and hear his story, you will be amazed &#8211; and he does incredible work too.</p>
<p>So we started out by finding a domain name that fits, and I was surprised to find that remodelingberkscounty.com was available. This was an early win for us and it set the tone for the rest of the project. We sat and talked &#8211; and talked and talked &#8211; he showed me his portfolio, explained how he works &#8211; he actually told me the best way to put up the child-gate so as not to damage the plaster in my old house. Tolu (my son) hates the gate!</p>
<p>Once we had a rapport going, he literally left everything else to me. </p>
<blockquote><p>I was &#8220;lucky&#8221; that he LOVED the design after the first round &#8211; that usually never happens, actually, that has never happened to me.</p></blockquote>
<p>Eric came to me through a referral from a buddy at church (thank you Eddie) and I knew I couldn&#8217;t let him down. The good thing about referrals is that, there is already a level of trust there and you don&#8217;t have to do a &#8220;dog-and-pony&#8221; show to gain some credibility.</p>
<p>I like Eric because he likes to keep things simple, and he knows what he wants.</p>
<p>The funnest part of this project was writing all the copy for the site.<br />
Check out the <a href="http://remodelingberkscounty.com/works/" target="_blank">WORKS</a> page.<br />
A line that I am particularly proud of is: </p>
<blockquote><p>If your house is a pig, and you need some lipstick, I’m your man.</p></blockquote>
<p>I can help you too&#8230; <a href="/contact/">say whaaa&#8230;</a></p>

<p>you see clips of <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/13/pat-robertson-haiti-curse_n_422099.html" target="_blank">what Pat Robertson said about Haiti all over the internet</a></p>
<p>I totally appreciate Donald Miller&#8217;s <a href="http://donmilleris.com/2010/01/13/1513/" target="_blank">response</a> on his blog, at the end he notes that:</p>
<blockquote><p>* I understand that many of you will want to comment on the theological truths you’ve found that support Robertson’s comments, and also on the good that Robertson has done. Regarding the latter, this was not a blanket dismissal on Robertson’s life or ministry, it was a response to a comment, regarding the former, it’s a debate I ask you to take somewhere else. Also, this isn’t meant to harshly judge Robertson, it’s meant to calm those who might want to throw a tomato at him, while also trying to understand why somebody could make such an insensitive comment at such a painful time. Lets put our tomatoes down.</p>
<p>* For those thinking this blog was too harsh, please understand that in one passing comment, Pat Robertson painted an entire nation as Godless, and deserving of destruction. Reports from Haiti have stated that many fled into the streets, crying out to Jesus for help. Robertson, by referencing an obscure book of unknown origin chose to prejudice an otherwise ignorant Christian audience of gullible and trusting viewers. I propose, then, this post needed to be written. I only wish more Christian leaders would speak during moments like this.</p>
<p><a href="http://donmilleris.com/2010/01/13/1513/" target="_blank"><small>A Response to Pat Robertson’s Comments about Haiti</small></a>

<p><a href="http://www.cbn.com/about/pressrelease_patrobertson_haiti.aspx" target="_blank">CBN issued a press release: </a></p>
<blockquote><p>This history, combined with the horrible state of the country, has led countless scholars and religious figures over the centuries to believe the country is cursed. Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God’s wrath. If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson’s compassion for the people of Haiti is clear.</p></blockquote>

<p>They say that the best solutions fill a void or meet a need.</p>
<p>Read this and then come back: <a href="http://jeffcroft.com/blog/2009/dec/15/are-web-agencies-design-heavy/" target="_blank">ARE WEB AGENCIES DESIGN-HEAVY?</a></p>
<p>From my experience, I think web agencies are design heavy and they should be &#8211; because sexy aesthetics sell. I&#8217;ve visited several &#8220;studios&#8221; and web design environments, and they are all pretty awesome, super cool, sleek and creative environments that the principals love to show off &#8211; as if the environment were the showcase piece of their portfolio.</p>
<p>This is all fine and dandy, but when it comes to programming, some of these environments could be frustrating. And it is not always feasible to productively write code or do analytical work. Sometimes the music is too loud, or there are waay too many forms of distraction, and sometimes the creative, clashes with the analytical process.</p>
<p>What I am trying to say is that &#8220;design&#8221; environments might not always be conducive for application developers (coders.) And agencies do not always have the work flow that requires the services of a full-time dedicated application developer. It&#8217;s interesting because the industry is providing a solution to this conundrum. A new kind of developer is emerging. Designers are crossing the boundary into development and vice versa. Some people even dub themselves as &#8220;Devigners.&#8221; For these people, the aforementioned studios are the perfect environment. A perfect blend of the creative and the analytical. Web design agencies should attract, nurture and retain these kinds of people.</p>
<blockquote><p>But there are instances when someone with a focused application development skill-set is needed.</p></blockquote>
<p>I do not think design agencies should be over-staffed on the development side of things. I think just as the Devigner role has emerged, web application developers are also being clearly defined. Building a web application is becoming a very specialized task &#8211; with applications becoming more and more complex &#8211; it requires a solid understanding of data stores, server architecture, usability, performance&#8230; and so on.</p>
<p>I was mostly a &#8220;CMS wrangler&#8221; (CMS = Content management System) for the first 2.5+ years of my independent contractor career. I customized and sometimes re-engineered <a href="http://dotnetnuke.com" target="_blank">Dotnetnuke</a> and <a href="http://wordpress.org" target="_blank">WordPress</a> to meet my demands. But it wasn&#8217;t always so; one of the highlights of my freelance career was building a custom Content Management System (CMS) for the <a href="http://www.mnh.si.edu/" target="_blank">Smithsonian Institution Museum of Natural History.</a> This was an exhilarating project! The web-based CMS allowed museum staff to manage their digital signage which was developed using Adobe Flash technology.</p>
<p>I miss building web-applications. One which has stood the test of time is <a href="http://www.sovereignbank.com/atm_locator/default.aspx?s=personal" target="_blank">Sovereign Bank&#8217;s Branch and ATM Locator</a> which was built at the end of 2006.</p>
<p>Bear with me for a little longer&#8230;</p>
<p>At least once every 6 months (or whenever she is filling out forms) my wife asks me: &#8220;what is it you do again?&#8221; and I kinda fumble when I tell her that I am programmer or developer or web developer (not web designer) &#8230;bla bla bla&#8230; This becomes a problem when you are trying to sell yourself to a client.</p>
<blockquote><p>Before I can truly determine my place, I must to determine my space.</p></blockquote>
<p>I might be opening up a can of worms here, but I want to clarify some popular web terminology (according to bala):</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">web design:</span> make it LOOK good</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">web development</span>: make it WORK good</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">web applications</span> allow us to accomplish one or more tasks.<br />
- example: gmail, wordpress, twitter</p>
<p>a <span style="text-decoration: underline;">static website</span> provides information (text, pictures, sounds, video)<br />
- example: cnn.com</p>
<p>a <span style="text-decoration: underline;">dynamic website</span> is a static website that has one or more web applications<br />
- example: facebook, twitter</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">front-end</span> developer builds a static website (devigners and wranglers fall into this category as well &#8211; using a CMS to build a static site)</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">back-end</span> developer (or programmer) builds dynamic websites.</p>
<p>here is what wikipedia thinks: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_design" target="_blank">web design</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_development" target="_blank">web development</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_application" target="_blank">web application</a>&#8230;</p>
<p>what are your definitions?</p>
<blockquote><p>So I am dubbing myself as web guy who specializes in web application development. <a href="/services">Check out what I can do&#8230;</a></p></blockquote>
<p>In the coming weeks, I&#8217;ll be spreading the word to see if any agencies could use front-end and back-end web development help.</p>
<p>talk to me!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-182" href="http://dbala.com/appengine-and-python/appengine-2/"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-182" title="appengine" src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/appengine1.jpg" alt="" width="1339" height="293" /></a></p>
<p>I once read that &#8220;&#8230;simplicity is king&#8221; . This cannot be more true when applied to programming. There are a LOT of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categorical_list_of_programming_languages" target="_blank">different categories of programming languages</a> out there and I find myself attracted to programming languages that offer a higher level of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abstraction_%28computer_science%29" target="_blank">abstraction</a>. Not because I am lazy, but because it is simpler to work with.</p>
<p>Let me explain&#8230;</p>
<blockquote><p>high-level of abstraction = high-level programming language = more legible code = easier. example: Visual Basic</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>low-level of abstraction = low-level programming language = not so legible code = looks like machine code = more difficult = super efficient and generally faster. example: assembly language</p></blockquote>
<p>There is a place and time for the different types of languages, although, the introduction of some high-level languages (Visual Basic) has drawn the scorn of many purists. They argue that because the coding syntax is more semantic and easier to understand, un-qualified people are now flocking into the field of programming. Some go to the extent of blaming part of the dot com crash of the 90&#8242;s to poor VBScript developers. The claim is that easier = lazier.</p>
<p>I definitely do not think that programming is for everyone. But imagine an excellent programmer that is equipped with the benefits that come with high-level (easier) languages. A programmer that is not hindered by difficult syntax and complex programming structures.</p>
<p>This is why I think that formal training in the art of computer science is so essential. I am grateful that in college, my resolve to be a programmer was put to the test with courses that required the use of low-level languages like assembly language and data-structured (functional) language like Common Lisp, and (not so low-level like) C++ and Java. This was before we were ever introduced to Visual Basic and PHP. Going through the grueling process of understanding data sections and data structures and pointers and inheritance and constructors and destructors&#8230; has made me a better programmer. And I&#8217;ve come to appreciate the higher-level languages like PHP and C# that help me get work done fast and efficiently in the real world.</p>
<p>NOW to Python and appengine&#8230;</p>
<p>I have to say that Python is a beautiful (high-level) language. And Google&#8217;s appengine platform is crazy responsive (surprised?). I tried developing on salesforce.com&#8217;s offering of a platform as a service (PAAS) and I was not impressed. Using the eclipse IDE to build on salesforce.com&#8217;s cloud was not responsive and seemed bloated &#8211; IMHO.</p>
<p>So I decided to use my latest pet project to try out Python and Google&#8217;s PAAS offering. In anticipation of a sucky PAAS experience, I started out using the <a href="http://www.djangoproject.com/" target="_blank">Django framework</a> on my local server.</p>
<p>My initial perception is that Python just seems to get out of the way, and allows you to get to work. There are many <a href="http://www.wingware.com/python/benefits" target="_blank">benefits</a> to Python, one of my favorites right now is:</p>
<blockquote><p>Maintainable Python: Python&#8217;s elegant simplicity yields code that is not only readable, but also easy to redesign and modify. Because Python&#8217;s syntax uses indentation to define program structure, code is easy to move around, making it a snap to split up modules or restructure classes. Less time is spent understanding and rewriting code, which leads to faster bug fixes, faster development and integration of new features, and a better-designed code base.<br />
<small>from: http://www.wingware.com/python/benefits</small></p></blockquote>
<p>for example, this is how you would query the zillow api to get the zestimate of a property and the high and low valuation;</p>
<pre><code>
...
        rpc = urlfetch.create_rpc()
        urlfetch.make_fetch_call(rpc, zillowurl)
        try:
            result = rpc.get_result()
            if result.status_code == 200:
            	dom = minidom.parseString(result.content)

            	#message
            	msg = dom.getElementsByTagName("message")[0]
            	result_node = dom.getElementsByTagName("result")[0]

            	message = msg.getElementsByTagName("text")[0].firstChild.data

            	if msg.getElementsByTagName("code")[0].firstChild.data == '0':
            		zesti = result_node.getElementsByTagName("zestimate")[0]

            		zestimate = zesti.getElementsByTagName("amount")[0].firstChild.data
            		zvaluation = zesti.getElementsByTagName("valuationRange")[0]
            		lowvaluation = zvaluation.getElementsByTagName("low")[0].firstChild.data
            		highvaluation = zvaluation.getElementsByTagName("high")[0].firstChild.data

            		zproperty = ({'zestimate':zestimate,
            					'lowvaluation':lowvaluation,
            					'highvaluation':highvaluation})

            	#self.response.out.write(zamount[0].firstChild.data)

        except urlfetch.DownloadError:
            message = 'There was an error retrieving the Zestimate, please try again later.'

	template_values = {
            'zproperty': zproperty,
            'message':message,
            }

		path = os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), 'index.html')
		self.response.out.write(template.render(path, template_values))

...
</code></pre>
<p>SO:<br />
Python ROCKS<br />
Django ROCKS<br />
Appengine ROCKS</p>
<p>I just need to find projects where I can apply this stuff!!!</p>
<p>ps: some people are experiencing similar ecstasy with Ruby (on Rails), more power to you, lets change the world with code&#8230;</p>

Everyone who wants to be perceived as sophisticated tries to play Golf. You&#8217;ve heard the tales of business deals being worked out over a &#8220;round &#8230;]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/tiger-800x574.jpg" alt="tiger" title="tiger" width="800" height="574" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-152" /><br />
Everyone who wants to be perceived as sophisticated tries to play Golf. You&#8217;ve heard the tales of business deals being worked out over a &#8220;round of golf&#8221;, or an epiphany that is encountered while in the midst of a pristine and well crafted golf course.</p>
<p>Culturally, -most- Nigerians do not levitate towards golf, probably because it is too stinking hot in our country &#8211; maybe that&#8217;s why we don&#8217;t go to the beach either. Anyways&#8230; we (my dad, my brother and I) were aware of the sport, but never paid attention&#8230; until Tiger hit the scene. All of a sudden we were inspired, here is a guy, who in some &#8211; distant &#8211; way is like us. I felt like I could be like him, because I could relate to him. </p>
<p>Do you know what I am talking about? For you it might not be Tiger or Golf, but the principle still applies. Some people can draw us and captivate us and pull us into their circle of influence.</p>
<p>This herd [drove, flock, pack, mob, group, collection] mentality is a significant driving force for we as humans. As much as we do not want to admit it, we are animals who follow, we want to fit in, we want to belong. In times of uncertainty, the easiest thing to do is follow.</p>
<p>&#8230;yeah so I tried &#8211; and tried and tried &#8211; to play golf, and I&#8217;m awful at it, but my brother, he is excellent.</p>
<p>Back to Tiger.</p>
<p>All this hoopla about Tiger Woods is crazy, my dad sent me a commentary (below) on the situation. </p>
<p>before we get to the commentary, this is what I think&#8230;<br />
I am scared that situations like what Tiger has done will make cheating &#8220;more acceptable&#8221; or &#8220;less wrong&#8221; because we all know he will bounce back, he will play some amazing golf, we will forgive him, even make excuses for him, and society keeps herding on.</p>
<p>so yeah&#8230; I follow Jesus &#8211; he is my role model, because ordinary men FALL, and they fall HARD.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8230;Tiger Woods isn&#8217;t as bad as he could be. But neither is he the role model he appeared to be. He&#8217;s not a thief or a murderer. He isn&#8217;t an abuser. Tiger is simply a serial adulterer. He enjoys being in the company of a variety of women. Tiger has just this one quirk, one besetting sin, one shortcoming, yet that quirk was the trip wire over which his entire world has come crashing down.</p>
<p>There isn&#8217;t a man on the planet who in this sense isn&#8217;t Tiger Woods.. There isn&#8217;t anything in Tiger that isn&#8217;t in you. None of us are as bad as we could be, but the propensity for lust, lying, anger, and unfaithfulness are all there—hidden in a heart that is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. There isn&#8217;t any one of us who is not capable, like Tiger, of saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s only this one time. No harm.&#8221;</p>
<p>A moral code can keep the Tiger in you in check for a time. The fear of getting caught is a restraint that keeps most men within the boundaries of their marriage. I&#8217;m sure it was that way for Tiger Woods. We have admired him as a man of disciplined perfection. But that discipline, that self-denial, which was so characteristically on display in Tiger&#8217;s athletic prowess, failed him with immeasurable consequences in his personal life. When push came to shove, Tiger had a great fall. Discipline, apparently, isn&#8217;t enough. &#8230;</p>

I read this excellent article by <a href="http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/12/8-questions-and-a-why.html" target="_blank">seth godin</a><br />
It got me thinking&#8230; don&#8217;t attempt this if you are insecure!</p>
<blockquote><p>8 questions and a why</p>
<p>Who are you trying to please?</p>
<p>What are you promising?</p>
<p>How much money are you trying to make?</p>
<p>How much freedom are you willing to trade for opportunity?</p>
<p>What are you trying to change?</p>
<p>What do you want people to say about you?</p>
<p>Which people?</p>
<p>Do we care about you?</p>
<p>(and after each answer, ask &#8216;why?&#8217;)</p></blockquote>
<p>Wanna know my answers? They rocked my world&#8230;</p>

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I&#8217;m &#8230;]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/xmas.jpg" alt="xmas" title="xmas" width="411" height="500" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-140" /><br />
If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I&#8217;m just another decorator.</p>
<p>If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals, and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my friends and family, I&#8217;m just another cook.</p>
<p>If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my friends and loved ones, it profits me nothing.</p>
<p>If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir&#8217;s cantata, but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.</p>
<p>Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love is kind, though harried and tired. Love doesn&#8217;t envy another&#8217;s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens. Love doesn&#8217;t yell at the kids to get out of the way. Love doesn&#8217;t give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can&#8217;t. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never fails. Electronic games and pearl necklaces will break or be lost; golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of love will endure forever.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Yeah... so I was burnt out!!! That is the truth. I can finally admit it to myself.

this is how I got to "burnt out."]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-133" title="sohappyithurtscolour" src="http://dbala.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/sohappyithurtscolour2.jpg" alt="sohappyithurtscolour" width="878" height="1320" /></p>
<p>Yeah&#8230; so I was burnt out!!! That is the truth. I can finally admit it to myself.</p>
<p>this is how I got to &#8220;burnt out.&#8221;</p>
<p>I got into college when I was 16 years old, I worked at a gas station, played rugby, went to school and partied &#8211; full-time. I somehow managed to graduate at 20 &#8211; my grades were awful. I got a job at <a href="http://sovereignbank.com" target="_blank">Sovereign Bank</a> right out of college. I married the love-of-my-life at 21 after dating for 4 years &#8211; and some marry-me-or-else pressure. We get pregnant, at six months pregnant, I had to leave for India to <a href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=50905&amp;id=715090896&amp;l=48068bc525" target="_blank">donate my kidney to my mother</a>. I was in India for two months and got back in time for 28 hours of labour and a CRAZY c-section experience. Please stay with me&#8230;</p>
<p>so i&#8217;m back, nothing in my life is the same, I have this crazy scar, an amazing child, a gorgeous wife, a beautiful home, an awesome job &#8211; and a new found appreciation for God almighty.</p>
<blockquote><p>quick segue&#8230; you know for a second I was angry at God that we had to go through with the transplant, but that quickly faded when I realized that He was with us in the midst of the awful process. I met some of the most AMAZING people at the <a href="http://www.cmch-vellore.edu/" target="_blank">Hospital (CMC Vellore)</a> &#8211; I got to give some lessons on (c# .net) web development to their web department, I got to do a redesign of the intranet and code it out &#8211; it was fun. And they all came to visit me after the surgery. Even though we were a billion miles away from home, we were NOT ALONE</p></blockquote>
<p>Can you imagine my universe? I am extremely happy that I could help my mother, but I am in constant pain or discomfort. &#8230;my performance at work is not as excellent as it was. And taking care of an infant is no joke &#8211; it is hard freaking work!!!</p>
<p>But I have this crazy (semi-destructive) ambition that makes me work &#8211; hard &#8211; all the time. I&#8217;d wake up retarded-ly early in the morning just to catch up on work, I would stay up late so I could keep up with family life. I started running 2 miles every morning to stay in shape, I have to check my blood pressure to make sure everything is functioning properly, I cannot (should not) eat red meat (beef, pork) or drink alcohol&#8230;</p>
<p>And I did this for 7 months. I was unhappy at work, &#8230;. For the first time in my career, I felt like I was not in control of what was happening to me. My job started to feel more-and-more difficult and suck-y. Things that were once trivial seemed complicated. So &#8230; I decided to make a break from having a full-time gig.</p>
<p>Yeah&#8230; so I&#8217;ve never been happier. Nowadays, I still wake up early, but I take naps during the day (sounds silly, but that makes me happy.) I get to read books again, and I even have the clarity of thought to even write again.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not all roses&#8230; I only make one/third of what I used to these days and money is very tight &#8211; and we are hurting. Christmas is going to be on a diet this year. I understand that it might have been somewhat selfish and irresponsible of me to stop receiving a steady paycheck with a family and all, but I am rejuvenated.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve worked &#8211; HARD &#8211; the past 10 years. If I had kept going it could have been worse &#8211; I cannot afford to break down.</p>
<p>So after a month&#8217;s break, I am back on the job market, and I cannot wait for the next 10 years&#8230;</p>
<p>bring it on&#8230;</p>

		<description><![CDATA[this logo looks sooo much better on paper.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So I&#8217;m working on my business plan, trying to properly categorize myself and my skills. I am trying to determine what label I should give myself.</p>
<p>Labels: artistic, creative, designer, imaginative talent&#8230;</p>
<p>I have great concepts for logos on paper, but I can&#8217;t make them as awesome digitally in Illustrator.<br />
I have the funniest slogans and concepts for tees, but I can&#8217;t always graphically translate them to hot &#8211; selling &#8211; t-shirts.<br />
I know when something looks horrible &#8211; but I can&#8217;t tell you why.<br />
I know when something looks great &#8211; but I can&#8217;t tell you why.</p>
<p>I went to school for computer science, and I&#8217;m skilled at my craft, do I want to go back to school to learn the tools of the design trade?</p>
<blockquote><p>I strongly believe that design lessons and degrees can &#8220;hone&#8221; one’s skills to a certain level of perfection but if someone lacks the imaginative talent, he can’t be a successful designer. There are so many people who have successfully obtained their designer degrees from top universities who can become “good” designers, but will never be “great”. If there’s not at least some of that innate thing we call “talent” though, there is no way to get it.</p>
<p>However, many people strongly believe that an individual can be whatever he wants to be, no matter if he is not bestowed with any god-given talent, just practice and determination can fill in the space.</p>
<p>from <a href=" http://www.graphicdesignblog.org/successful-graphic-designers-talent-versus-degrees/" target="_blank">Graphic Design Blog</a></p></blockquote>
<p>Maybe I am going about this this the wrong way, do I need to offer &#8220;aesthetic&#8221; services in-order to successfully run a web shop? Although aesthetic services sell very well &#8211; and are waaay sexier than analytical services &#8211; I have a creatively analytical mind.</p>
<p>Now I have to find my space in the market place.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8230;the most difficult thing to do is brand yourself&#8230;</p>
<p>bala.</p></blockquote>

<p>Our manifesto (inspired by:  http://b.lesseverything.com/)</p>
<p>I&#8217;m the co-founder of an unknown software company. I don&#8217;t have aspirations of being some widely known madman genius that develops massively popular products. I don&#8217;t dream of Ferrari, jets and hookers. I want to know my users, I want them to know me and feel like they can email me with questions anytime.</p>
<p>I want to work with Obinna Elechi and Gbenro Ladipo until the internet goes away and it&#8217;s replaced with microchips in your brain. Then they and I will find some other business to build. I want to stay inspired and continue to work with amazing people. I want our company to invest in people, artists, craftsmen, people with passion.</p>
<p>I want to ride my bike with my kids to school in the mornings and coach their sport teams in the afternoon. My goal is to embarrass them because I&#8217;m awkward and weird. I want to take more vacations, buy an RV and nomad around the world. I want work when I feel like it, not because I have to.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t want to build a company that has no flavor, no passion and is a lifeless machine. I want a company that people either love or love a lot. I am the co-founder of an unknown software company, I work too much, I am stressed and I can&#8217;t imagine doing anything else.</p>
